The carriage of goods by different Railway Undertakings (RUs) requires standard technical and operating rules to ensure seamless use of wagons in transport which does not involve transhipment. This can help improve the cost effectiveness and consequently the competitiveness of rail freight transport. These regulations govern the exchange, use and treatment of new bogie wagons between RUs with a track gauge of 1435 mm and RUs with a track gauge of 1520 mm, in accordance with the RIV agreement and the PPW regulations. Provided these rules contain no provision to the contrary, RIV applies to 1435 mm gauge lines and the PPW to 1520 mm gauge lines. The member railway undertakings are listed in Appendix A.
