The use of standard terminology and interpretation keys which, for the entire range of applications, are identically structures is meant to ensure that the results of inventories are comparable. This is because inventories, although all based on CIR-areal photograps, may nevertheless have been taken at different sites and/or different points in time. It is only on this condition that aerial photographs can be used to document regional, federal and national comparisons as well as the various stages of long-term monitorings. The interpretation keys presented below have been established for the evaluation of the state of crowns of individual trees.
