The standard describes a standard procedure to ensure safe operation of additive manufacturing machines using laser beam melting of metallic parts. The relevance and applicability of existing regulations from contiguous fields of technology (e.g. welding, powder metallurgy, and nano particles) is reviewed in each particular case. Relevant technical rules, regulations and laws are collected and commented. Recommendations on how to comply with existing rules on different steps within the laser beam melding process are given. This standard mainly aims at operators of laser beam melting machines and at persons or companies planning to purchase and run such machines with metal parts. This standard also addresses organisations giving safety advice to operators, suppliers of safety equipment and facilities and logistics services for dangerous goods. The scope of this standard are CE-labelled encapsulated laser beam melting machines. Operators of laser beam melting machines are obligated to perform and document a risk assessment. This standard supports in a practicable and understandable way.
