The non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz frequency range enables non-destructive and contactless measurements and testing in numerous applications. After first uses in astronomy and atmosphere research new application fields in security, medicine and communication technologies as well as in non-destructive testing were developed. Terahertz waves can penetrate dielectric media such as polymers and ceramics. This enables investigations of the inner parts of an object without the need of special safety requirements as needed e.g. with X-rays. The application of the standard facilitates the communication between users, manufacturers and distributors of terahertz systems. The standard lists known application fields as well as the functional principles of terahertz systems to support decisions when choosing a system type. After a short introduction to the physical principles and notes on electromagnetic compatibility, radiation protection and regulated frequencies the different types of terahertz systems are introduced in detail. The standard gives advice on the characterisation of terahertz waves by measurements. Application fields such as non-destructive testing, thickness and distance measurements, tomography and chemical analysis are described in-depth. Extensive references to literature enable deeper studies on the standard's topics. An overview table showing which terahertz systems can be used for the different purposes completes the standard.
